Carving a pumpkin is not a difficult as it may seem. In fact, if you would just follow these step-by-step instructions you will find how easy and fun it really is to design and carve a pumpkin. Get ready to show your family, friends, and others your amazing masterpiece this Halloween.

Things you will need:
Healthy large pumpkin, carving knife, newspaper or plastic sheet covering, vegetable oil, candle or battery operated light, stencils, black marker, large spoon, cleaning cloth

Instructions:

Step 1

Select your pumpkin. Make sure that the pumpkin you select has a long stem and is fresh and healthy.

Step 2
Cover your table or other work area with a newspaper or plastic table covering before you begin to prevent messy overflow while cleaning and carving your pumpkin.

Step 3
Wash your pumpkin with a damp cloth generously to remove dirt and other grime from your pumpkin. Dry excess water from pumpkin. Lightly oil the outside of pumpkin to give it a glossy clean look and a longer life.

Step 4

Next, measure approximately 3-5 inches at the top of your pumpkin just underneath the stem…draw a circle around the top area. Now cut and remove the top and place it to the side for the time being. The top will be the cap for your jack-o’-lantern.

Steps 5
Next, use a large spoon to thoroughly scrape and remove pulp and seeds. Discard pulp. Save seeds to make delicious and healthy pumpkins seeds later.

Step 6

Next, you can draw your favorite design by hand with your marker or else use a stencil to trace your design on the pumpkin face. You can download free pumpkin carving stencils and patterns at http://www.BHG.com (Better Homes and Gardens) or search the net for other sites where you can download free designs and pumpkin carving stencils.

Step 7
Now carefully follow and cut along the pattern design on the face of pumpkin that you have created. Gently press each piece from the inside out. Remove and discard.

Step 8

Last, place a candle or battery operated light inside the pumpkin on the bottom area to light up your pumpkin. Caution: be sure to remove cap when candle is burning or else cut a hole in the back area to allow smoke to escape. Use cap when using battery operated light.

Showcase your jack-o’-lantern for all to see and enjoy.

Tips:
*Add you’re your favorite spices inside pumpkin to give off a pleasant aroma.
*Can also cut small area in the back of pumpkin for cord, if you chose to use a small light with a cord. In this case you will need to place your pumpkin near a safe outlet.

Warnings:
*Always blow out candle when unattended
*Keep children away from burning candle
